Ealing MP Rupa Huq has questioned whether the new prime minister Liz Truss has the 'metal' required to deal with the current cost of living crisis, pledging to her constituents that she will hold the Tory leader to account every step of the way.
After weeks of ill-tempered debate, the foreign secretary defeated Rishi Sunak with 57% of the votes to his 43%.
The announcement triggers the start of a handover from Boris Johnson, who was forced to announce his resignation in July after a string of scandals that saw support for his administration fade away.
He will travel to Scotland on Tuesday to meet Queen Elizabeth to officially tender his resignation and Truss will follow him and be asked to form a government by the monarch.
In a victory speech, Truss vowed to deal with the current energy crisis and set out a plan to cut taxes moving forward.
She said: "We need to show that we will deliver over the next two years. I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy.
"I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people's energy bills, but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply."
However, the Ealing Central and Acton MP Huq holds little hope for change and has urged Truss to ensure families are placed as the number one priority with the country suffering a major cost-of-living crisis.
Speaking to Ealing Nub News she said: "At a time when families across Ealing, Acton and Chiswick are facing real worry over rising bills, our next Prime Minister has had more to say about cutting tax for huge corporations and culture war issues than what she's going to do about the cost-of-living crisis affecting every household.
"During the seemingly endless leadership campaign, Liz Truss failed to set out a plan on the single-biggest issue facing the public, creating a huge amount of uncertainty for businesses and families alike. I'm not convinced she grasps the scale of the crisis ahead of us or has the mettle to deal with it she's continuity Boris, offering more of the same tired ideas that got us into this mess in the first place.
"Liz Truss needs to stop delaying and ensure no one pays a penny more on their energy bill this winter, paid for by a windfall tax on oil and gas companies. I will be holding her Government to account every step of the way."
Truss will become the Conservative's fourth prime minister since a 2015 election and is expected to detail a plan addressing the country's soaring energy prices within days, with an announcement understood to be pencilled in for Thursday.
