Physiotherapists at London North West University NHS Trust have declared a walking aid amnesty for the return on unused crutches.

People in Ealing, Brent, and Harrow are being asked to return any unused walking aids given to them by hospitals as they have a shortage of such items,

Patients are often given crutches and other such walking aids when they need them for a length of time, but often they are not returned when they are no longer needed, and they can now be returned with no consequences to hospitals.

Victoria Manson, Principal Lead Musculoskeletal and Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, at Northwick Park Hospital, said: "We do have a shortage of crutches, frames and walking sticks.

"This means it can be a struggle to provide patients with the support they need, which in some cases can lead to discharge being held up.

"It can cost tens of thousands of pounds each year to replace walking aids.

"We'd really appreciate it if people can have a check at home and return any aids they have. That will allow us to clean them up and re-use/recycle them for other people to use."

Any metal Zimmer frames, crutches, or walking sticks can be returned to the physiotherapy receptions at Northwick Park Hospital level four, Central Middlesex Hospital ground floor, and Ealing Hospital level one.

Wooden walking sticks and commodes are not being taken back, for more information visit the website.
