An Ealing Council councillor for Dormers Wells ward, Tejinder Dhami, has passed away.

Councillor Dhami represented Dormers Wells ward since 2002 and was Mayor of the borough from 2018 to 2019, during which time he supported Heartlink and Age UK.

He undertook a variety of duties during his time as a councillor, including vice chair of the regulatory committee and a member of both corporate parent and freedom of the borough committees.

He was a member of the Labour Party and was Labour group secretary from 2006 to 2013, as well as assistant whip.

Councillor Dhami lived and worked in Ealing since coming to the UK in 1962.

In his professional life Councillor Dhami worked at the Lyons Maid ice cream factory for 28 years and then for Marks and Spencer up to his retirement.

He was a life member of the Indian Workers Association (IWA) and an executive member of the IWA since 1997.

He maintained a keen interest in sport, playing hockey for Ealing Technical College and taking part in Indian Gymkhana in the 1970s and was a life member of the Indian Gymkhana.

Councillor Peter Mason, leader of the council said: "Tejinder was kind, wise and resolute in equal measure and I have very fond and warm memories of him that I will cherish.

"He willingly gave his time and experience to the community he loved and will be missed by all of us who worked closely with him and those he represented.

"Whilst Tejinder was soft in speech, his wisdom and sage advice has been such a feature of his time on the council and in the wider community over the many decades of his public service, not least during his Mayoralty.

"On behalf of all councillors and council officers, our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time."

With Local Elections scheduled for May 2022, there will be no by-election prior to that.
