Ealing Council: 'we need to do some things better' following Ombudsman annual review
Ealing Council admits failings following The Housing Ombudsman Annual Complaints Review.
The performance report for the London Borough of Ealing from April 2022-March 2023, shows a 63% in maladministration rate, 15 maladministration cases and £4,725 paid in compensation to tenants.
Maladministration could be that the landlord failed to do something, delayed a response to a initial complaint or done something they should not have.
Ealing Council admitted that the last few years have been a difficult time for all social landlords.
A council spokesperson said: "The COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit, and the cost-of-living crisis mean that this is a very challenging time for all social landlords, and Ealing is no exception.
"There has been an unprecedented surge in demand to our homelessness prevention service, which continues to be one of the best performing in London despite escalating demand.
"However, we know we need to do some things better."
Despite findings, the council says it is committed to providing quality social housing for the residents of Ealing.
The council added: "As part of our Council Plan, we're committed to ensuring that everyone can live in a decent, secure, and safe home.
"Despite an extremely challenging economic environment, we are delivering thousands of desperately needed, high quality new homes to let at genuinely affordable rents.
"Furthermore, we have committed to spending £400 million on improving our existing stock of homes over the current council term, including new kitchens and bathrooms for thousands of homes.
"This has helped us take on a new repairs contractor to deal with our maintenance backlog and will help to deliver more energy efficient homes."
The report found that Ealing has a 23% no maladministration rate.
Across the country the national maladministration rate is 55%.
For the first time, the Ombudsman received over 5,000 complaints, a 28% increase on the previous year.
London continues to be where the Ombudsman makes most of its determinations, even accounting for the quantity of social homes in the region.
It had the highest maladministration rate and accounted for 77 of the 130 severe maladministration findings last year.
