Ealing Council is increasing the supply of much-needed housing in the borough by making better use of underused sites

A derelict garage site in Southall could soon be transformed into four new family homes under fresh redevelopment plans backed by Ealing Council.
The council-owned plot on Recreation Road has been identified for housing as part of the borough's wider push to make better use of smaller, underused sites.
Architect-developer Oddment has been appointed to lead the scheme, which is subject to planning permission. The project would deliver four family-sized homes on land currently occupied by disused garages.
Ealing Council said the appointment supports both local businesses and the Mayor of London's Small Sites, Small Builders (SSSB) programme, which aims to help smaller developers bring forward housing projects on overlooked plots of land.
Council leader Peter Mason said: "By working with developers like Oddment, we are helping to support local jobs while revitalising small, often forgotten plots of land to build the homes our residents want.
"This project is a great example of the way we can marshal our resources to build a fairer economy."
The Recreation Road site has long been considered suitable for redevelopment.
Councillor Louise Brett, deputy leader and cabinet member for safe and genuinely affordable homes, said unlocking smaller sites is key to tackling the borough's housing pressures.
She said: "By converting underused land like this into family homes, we're creating much needed new homes while supporting local small and medium-sized builders.
"This development is a great example of how our partnerships are delivering homes that meet the needs of our communities."
Oddment was founded in 2024 by Ned Scott and Alex Somerville, who both have links to the borough. Mr Somerville grew up in Ealing and has previously worked on projects in the area.
Speaking about the plans, he said: "We're absolutely thrilled by this opportunity. The project perfectly captures what Oddment is all about – design-led, characterful homes that feel rooted in their surroundings.
"For me, having grown up in Ealing, it's especially meaningful to be creating new homes in the borough."
The developer said it plans to consult with nearby residents before submitting a planning application.
Mr Somerville added: "We're taking a proactive and welcoming approach to engagement, beginning with outreach to local residents through flyers and neighbour visits, so we can listen, learn, and shape the project together."
The scheme forms part of Ealing Council's wider programme to bring forward smaller housing developments across the borough, supported through funding from the Greater London Authority.
Further small sites are expected to be put out to tender later this year.
