Ealing community project leader awarded British Empire Medal in New Year's Honours
A COMMUNITY project leader from Southall has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) as part of the New Year's Honours.
Daljit Singh Grewal is the Project Coordinator at Mael Gael, based at Norwood Hall and he was recognised for the work he has done in the community.
Over the past six years, under Grewal's stewardship, Mael Gael has made rapid progress becoming a leading community organisation within Ealing and the surrounding boroughs.
Mael Gael established a Food Bank in Southall to aid families and individuals in economic hardship.
It also established a shopping service for those unable to shop for themselves servicing daily referrals from Ealing Council and local community groups.
A free-meals service ensured the delivery of freshly cooked healthy meals to help alleviate food insecurity in the area.
Grewal said: "This is an incredible honour; I am in total disbelief.
"I feel very fortunate to be supported by such an enthusiastic and dynamic team, driven by the selfless service of others.
"The need for what we do at Mael Gael has never been greater."
Narinder Sian, a spokesperson for Mael Gael added: "We are extremely pleased with Daljit's recognition.
"He's been working hard alongside us both at the Gurdwara and Mael Gael.
"A hugely talented and valued member of the team.
"His voluntary work in the fields of education, care for the elderly, women's issues and the engagement of our youth has been outstanding".
