Award-winning Ealing takeaway blasted for rat and mice droppings
By Megan Stanley
A popular Ealing kebab takeaway has been slammed by the Food Standards Agency after mice and rat droppings were found in the toilet.
Ali's Berlin Doner, opposite Ealing Broadway station, was given a Food Hygiene Rating of one by the Food Standards Agency in September for a number of issues including broken tiles and no hot water or soap in the preparation area.
The Turkish restaurant, which won a British Kebab Award in 2018, was told that improvement was needed when inspectors visited in September. A major improvement was needed in the management of food safety, a report said.
The inspectors wrote: "Mice droppings were found on the floor of the WC. Mice and rat droppings found on the floor as shown under the sink." The restaurant was advised to remove the droppings and disinfect the whole area immediately.
Inspectors further found that there was no running hot water in the preparation room. The inspector added: "At the time of inspection there was no soap or hand drying facilities at the downstairs wash basin, you must ensure soap and handwash is available at all times."
The cleaning protocol of the restaurant was also criticised, with food and debris found in multiple areas. In the report, the inspector said that when asked to demonstrate how the restaurant cleans surfaces, they used their disinfectant incorrectly and wiped surfaces "immediately" rather than waiting five minutes.
The inspector added: "You must clean your surfaces using a two-stage process which includes firstly wiping down with hot soapy water and then spraying with an appropriate sanitiser."
Inspectors further found broken and cracked tiles, plus damaged ceilings due to water leaks. A plug socket near the vegetable chopper was also cracked.
The owner of Ali's Berlin Doner has said that they have since rectified all the issues found by inspectors and are due for another inspection soon. They said: "We have a contract with Rentokil that does regular checks since we have opened the shop. The poor rating is because of the tiles and other things, nothing to do with hygiene.
The latest check from Rentokil, which took place in July, said: "I checked and dated all tamper-resistant bait stations and found no signs of rodent activity. Rentokil will continue monitoring the premises."
