100 bike hangars have been installed in Ealing
The 100th bike hangar has been installed in Ealing last week the council has announced.
Its installation means the council is on the way to delivering on its promise to install 150 hangars in the borough by 2026.
Councillor Peter Mason, leader, Ealing Council and Councillor Deirdre Costigan, cabinet member for climate action, paid a visit to the latest hangar, located on Broughton Road, West Ealing on Monday, 25 March.
More bike hangars are currently being installed at Green Drive / Knowsley Avenue, Southall; Wordsworth Avenue, Greenford; Northwood Gardens, north Greenford; Half Acre Road, Hanwell; West Lodge Court, Ealing Common and Loveday Road, West Ealing, bringing the total of hangars to 106.
The locations of the bike hangars were suggested by the community and each parking space costs just 70p per month (£8.40 per year), the cheapest in London.
One bike hangar allows parking for six bicycles, which the council says is to reflect its commitment to share space on streets more fairly with residents who want to walk and cycle.
Councillor Peter Mason said: "We know that one of the main barriers to people cycling is having somewhere safe and affordable to keep a bicycle.
"That is why we are increasing the number of bike hangars, and why we have also cut the price of a permit. Residents can park their bike more cheaply in Ealing than anywhere else in the capital."
Councillor Deirdre Costigan said: "Delivering over 100 bike hangars to where residents want them is part of our commitment to invest £10million to support sustainable and active travel such as cycling, walking, and scooting where residents need them.
"We will continue to work with residents to help increase active travel, so we can all enjoy cleaner air and a more sustainable borough."
Almost 350 people took part in the bike hangar consultation in 2022, sharing their views on where they would like to see bike hangars installed.
