We read this week that hundreds of bus routes will be cancelled or frequencies cut across London, with many affecting our borough.

Whether it is the fault of a lack of investment from the Tory government or action from the Labour Mayor of London, residents want to see positive action to improve our public transport in Ealing. Both appear to be failing.

About ten years ago the Conservatives wanted to remove the well loved 94 bus terminus in Chiswick. This would have been a massive blow to residents who relied on the bus to get to central London to work.

More recently the Labour Mayor has reduced the 440 service causing issues for many local elderly residents.

Liberal Democrats know that many bus services are a vital link for those who have part time or low paid jobs.

And how can other people be persuaded to reduce car use and become more carbon neutral if our public services are left to wither?

Liberal Democrats say those services need investment.

The changes which might start from December could result in more than a million fewer public transport journeys each day. This in turn will drive (no pun intended) large numbers of people back into their cars.

This £1.3 billion financial black hole for Transport for London means that there will be a spell of managed decline and this will not be good for anyone whether it be residents, workers or visitors to London.

It appears that we might have no more electric buses, no more step-free stations, no upgrade of the Piccadilly line signalling system, no more walking schemes.

As a Liberal Democrat I think that the Tories in government and the Mayor of London need their heads bashed together so that our public transport can be improved not squashed.
