Firefighters were called to a fire at a restaurant in Ealing last night, believed to be caused by an active hot plate.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were sent to Piccola Italia Restaurant on The Green at 10:32 pm after the fire broke out.

The blaze is believed to have been caused by a hot plate which was accidentally turned on.

Seven people managed to leave the flats above the restaurant before the Brigade arrived and there were no reports of any injuries.

Fire crews from Ealing, Acton, Southall and Chiswick fire stations attended the scene and firefighters had the blaze under control by just after 11 pm.

Part of the ground floor has experienced fire damage.

Piccola Italia has said they are in the process of cleaning up the 'mess' that has been caused and they are hoping to get the restaurant back open by tonight or tomorrow.

Firefighters tips for restaurants and takeaways

The London Fire Brigade have issued advice to hospitality businesses on how to reduce the likelihood of a fire. Here are their tips:

Have ducting cleaned regularly.

Ensure ducting is installed correctly.

Make sure all electrical items are tested and maintained – check regularly, and don't allow employees to bring their own kitchen appliances to work.

Ensure your electrical system is regularly tested – at least once every year.

Educate your staff about the risks of overloading sockets.

Complete your Fire Risk Assessment, and make an emergency plan.
